That's why I'm convinced rioting is never the answer. It only hurts us more. And those responsible for causing the violent reaction only shrug and go about their business as usual.
Now, if we were to take a page from the French Revolution and riot all the way to the palace, maybe we'd get somewhere. Maybe.
Only if we could figure out which palace would be most effective...
The Braid Shop bullshit pisses me off the most. How is that conducive to furthering the cause?

I really do not understand. "'She should be glad she just lost her business and not her life,' Sykes said." Boggles.
Well, you know any black people who got some money together to own a business must be tools of The Man.
I just knew it was gonna be a riot...they should have planned to hold the protest at the Rockridge train station or something...actually ixnay on the iotray, let's have a teach-in instead
I totally said last night to whittles
I want to give these idiots a map to the areas they should be setting on fire and included Rockridge.
I wonder this nearly every time I see a protest/demonstration/riot in the area. What do they want to happen? The cop to be thrown on the street so they can lynch him.
A very frightened cop made a mistake. We all make mistakes. He just made the wrong one at the wrong time. I would like to see how cool ANY of those protesters would have acted in his stead.
Where is reason when you need him?
I think reason is a woman. A woman who didn't shoot an unarmed man.
(that's not to say I think rioting is good. I'm just sayin'....)
Reason is still hiding out in the same place it was hiding when the cop pulled his gun in the first place.
The protesters are not supposed to act as cool as a cop in that stuation. The police are supposed to be held to a higher standard, not lower. His training(that we, the taxpayers paid for BTW...) is supposed to prepare him for situations like this. His training is supposed to teach him to react appropriately. The officer failed in applying that training. If that same kid who got shot was "frightened" and made a "mistake" and shot someone, he would be in jail right now, facing at the very least a lengthy jail stay.
Because it was a cop there is at best a delay in justice and at worse, an attempt to somehow rationalize and justify his actions.
The city failed in admitting that to the public.
Riots happen due to a failure of the government to govern. The populace of an area that is already wary of law enforcement feels that frustration when those who are tasked with upholding the law, break it without repurcussion. People riot because of frustration with the system that consistently denies people of the fundemental rights.
Protest and demonstraions turn into riots when the government fails to see and respond to the seriousness of the issue at hand.
BTW, I am one of the biggest supporters of Law enforcement in the world, but wrong is wrong.
He was scared? Rly? Maybe he should have chosen a different career. Like a Barista at Starbucks.
I have a really annoyed response to your comment that will have to wait. But it's coming, fo sho.
I am not for rioting, but I am for civil disturbance. And I would love to see some of the disturbance happening in front of the Mayors house... or the Police Commisioners.
Is there a citizens review board for BART Police? Where are they?
That's one of the issues--there is no citizens review board. But I suspect that'll be one of the first things that changes this quarter.
But of course the mofos breaking shit? Live in Berkeley.
GET OFF MY SIDE AND GET OUT OF MY CITY.
Yeah, I don't really see how mom n' pop corner stores are outposts for "the man"... :/
Nope--but as others have rightly pointed out, the few people involved in most of that crap don't even LIVE in Oakland--it's irritating (white?) anarchists from Berkeley. So, it's not their neighborhood. It's ours.
Having seen this
I wonder how many of those people smashing windows and shit actually live in Oakland. I'm thinking not many.
Right after I posted, I was about to go back and edit--because OF COURSE it's jackasses from Berkeley. Of course it is.
Well, you know, the white anarchists who usually do the biggest shit sure aren't doing it in their own neighborhood...
I totes had flashbacks about the SDS Weathermen's antics and the price the Panthers paid for them.
people riot when their team wins. they riot when their team loses. they riot when its hot outside. they riot when they think they can get enough riot-minded people in the same area. has nothing to do with politics, protest, getting a message across or any of that bullshit. they riot because they like throwing off control and acting like children who can do whatever they want.
so no point in asking them to please go riot in someone elses back yard. theyll always just take whatever yard is handy.
Actually, I believe that oppressed people riot when they feel they have nothing left to lose and privileged people riot to show how much sh!t they can get away with. Which is why you usually see oppressed people riot when they've been further disenfranchised and privileged people riot "when their team wins," like rock stars trashing a hotel room.
