Poetry feature at the Oakland Slam March 26th. [Wednesday, Mar. 4th, 2009|11:33 am]
The richest girl in town.

This month, we bring you a special show to show how hard the fairer sex throws down. In honor of National Women's Month we're featuring one long-time favorite (Lauren Wheeler) and one fresh faced newcomer (Hadeel).

Lauren Wheeler is a recovering slam poet who competed at the National Poetry Slam in 1998, as a member of the renegade Team SF-Mission District, and again in 1999, as a member and the coach of Team Ithaca, NY. She has featured across the country and was a core organizer of the ForWord Girls poetry and spoken word festival in San Francisco. Her work has appeared in Lodestar Quarterly, Other Magazine, 365tomorrows, and Spindle Magazine.

Hadeel up and ran away with first place at both the prelims and finals of our recent Youth Slam. She wowed the judges with her deep & heart felt work. We hadn't been planning to feature the youth champ (we have other plans there, stay tuned) but once we heard her and thought about this months show we had to... you'll see why when you hear her poetry.

FYI - This LAST Thursdaze is the final opportunity to qualify for Oakland's '09 Slam Team. April's shows are Semis and Finals and will not have open sign-ups for the slam. We WILL have an open-mic as always.

Does everyone describe themselves (themself?) as a "recovering" slam poet?

I'm the only one that I know of, and I've been calling myself that for several years. This, in fact, will be the first time I've read at a slam, in any capacity, since 2003. And I don't think I've competed at a slam since I lived in L.A., which I left in 2001.

Oh, no! That's fine. The only thing I might add is a mention of having been published in Spindle Magazine (gotta plug Guy!) and maybe a note about my burlesque alter-ego Lola Vauntz. Hmm....

How's this?

Lauren's alter-ego Lola Vauntz also performs burlesque in the Bay Area and may often be found on the stage of the Hubba Hubba Revue."

I could have sworn I've heard it elsewhere. Either that or the voices in my head have figured out "reverb" :)
