corset & bougainvillea

Nina Simone lives in a raw, ragged corner of my heart.

Kenneth McClane, my college advisor, once told a story of going to see her at the Apollo, I believe, with his father. During her performance, she asked, "Are there any Black people here?" Ken and his father raised their hands. She looked at them and said, "This is for you." I don't remember which song he said she actually performed, but it really doesn't matter.

I will be performing to "See-Line Woman" Monday night at the Uptown Club.
