One more down.

I was up at 6 this morning for the Oakland Rising launch. More than six organizations and 100 people all gathered at Preservation Park to kick off our electoral precinct walking to defeat Prop. 98. I'd planned to head back to headquarters to make phone calls during the field work, but ended up knocking doors instead to evaluate someone for a community organizing training program. Too bad I was wearing my bike shoes. They are comfortable, but I definitely wasn't banking on walking around in them for hours. But it wasn't too bad, and I'd forgotten how much I love door-knocking. My precinct was in West Oakland, near deFremery Park, and it was a nice day to stroll around spreading the word. Most of the folks on my list weren't home, or had moved, and three had died, but I did make some contacts with the occasional voters I was trying to reach. And there were lots of friendly folks around--kids playing, people washing their cars, gardening--so I had some nice conversations. And even the homeowners I talked to said they're voting no. One woman made the comment, "My kids rent, and I don't want them moving home with me, so I'll vote no." Heh.

Now I'm exhausted and trying to figure out what to do with my evening. There are a couple of housewarming parties and Bootie and Mike Relm at the Independent. We'll see. First, a nap....
