How does one remove a tick from one's dog?

Also, I'm gonna need people to stop begging. It's not cute.

Just yank it out with two fingers. Most of the time, it'll come out just fine.

Blah. I am repulsed, but I'll do it. This is the first tick Java's gotten. I assume she found her new little friend during her 1.6 mile unaccompanied hike on Saturday.

don't use fingers, just in case the tick is infected with anything. Also, make sure to sterilize the area and the tweezers you use.

tweezers. Don't try to burn it off. You can kill the tick with alcohol in a jar, and if you are worried take it to the vet to have it analyzed. Don't yank on the tweezers- pull slowly and firmly.

careful with the tweezer and pull don't twist - if you break off the body the head can still stay in there and release the diseases

pet store has tick removers that cost approx $4 and work better than anything

if you beak off the body so the head is stuck in - soak it 4x a day with diluted betadine

you need to get it out within 24 hours to avoid the likliehood of lyme disease

here are instructions for how to remove a tick after first stunning it with alcohol (which, let's face it, sounds pretty cool):

http://www.dogticks.org/dog-ticks-removal.php

also, i've heard that if you put garlic in java's food every day it will act as a deterrent and keep tics away from him, similar to the way that garlic in a human's diet will repel mosquitoes, i guess.
