Looking for more crit on the poem (and mostly finding cult-like adoration) I found this:

"I knew something important had happened, though no one knew it yet," Hoagland said. He expressed contempt for what he described as the rugged and base way that an African-American came out on top of a white competitor. Hoagland said very few publishers had been willing to associate themselves with this politically incorrect work, but he feels that it is important to always be honest, and likes his poems to upset people.

"I was giving a voice to America's dirty secret," said Hoagland. "I like to shock some people."

"He expressed contempt for what he described as the rugged and base way that an African-American came out on top of a white competitor."

Just.....SMH

He has, it seems, garnered far more attention by writing blatant racism into his poems, and fame is intoxicating, some have said. I guess it's more intoxicating than having a moral compass.

rugged and base way
rugged and base way

I've been trying to roll that one around in my head a while and yet the mind still boggles. It's like, really dude? You want dainty and light then watch ice dancing. And I could use "rugged and base" to describe whole histories of oppression that damn sure weren't sports competitions.

Apparently if you google his name and racism, you get far less boot-licking.

I hate discovering that I can still be shocked like this.

It's just so inexcusable. I just can't understand how he still looks at himself in the mirror.

P.S. to the first commentator @ Matt Cozart: the point of "Foodcourt" is to say "I am a snob. Look how I sneer."
